According to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental health concerns for children, adolescents, and adults is a growing issue in America. In 2014 the National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimated that there were approximately 43.6 million adults aged 18 or older that were diagnosed with any mental illness and 9.8 million adults 18 or older that were diagnosed with a serious mental illness. Among children this number is approximately 1 in 5 who are currently diagnosed, or will be diagnosed at sometime in their life.
For those who are experiencing a mental health concern, it can be scary and confusing. It may even be embarrassing to admit to family and friends that you are having these concerns, or that your child is having these concerns. But having a mental illness does not have to a defining moment for you or your child, and the first step is acknowledging it and finding help. Speaking up, in its self, is a sign of strength, and you may even find that you are more supported than you anticipated.
A mental health condition does not have to define the individual that you are or who you become. With the right services and the right support, you can overcome your challenges, and learn to adapt. Many of those who seek treatment, and are managing their symptoms live full lives, and are able to speak of their condition, encouraging others to seek help.
